Worth knowing about the sapphire crystal of your watch

Visually, there is hardly any difference between a sapphire crystal and a mineral crystal. However, if one looks at the specific material properties, large differences can be observed. In contrast to mineral glass, which is similar to quartz in its chemical structure, sapphire glass is manufactured synthetically and consists of high-purity aluminium oxide.

A sapphire crystal has a hardness of nine, which corresponds exactly to that of the natural precious stone sapphire from which the name for the crystal was derived. Mineral glasses only have hardness grades of six to seven. Due to its material properties, sapphire crystal is extremely durable, scratch-resistant and also particularly unbreakable. Despite heavy use, a sapphire crystal still looks the same as on the first day, even after years.
